Whereabouts: Sun Young Kang In Between Presence and Absence
Permanent since 2022, Paper-casting using recycled fiber from discarded paper
Whereabouts: In Between Presence and Absence uses discarded paper to create paper pulp and cast everyday vessels. This process allows me to visualize the invisible—the parallel to the visible world. By installing the vessels upside-down, I deconstruct their original identity (as containers that are typically placed on surfaces like tables or floors) and highlight the container's void. This creates a sense of weightlessness, inviting the audience to experience a paradoxical feeling of being weighed down by something intangible and unsubstantial (something weightless). As a result, the negative space of the ceiling is filled with emptiness, articulating a non-describable concept: the coexistence of presence and absence, and the tension between them.
* Whereabouts: The Influence of Place and Space is an ongoing series of installations considering the most public-facing space – the Lobby, Living Room, and Cases of Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts of Kendall. Artists build an immersive environment or site-specific work that responds to the space’s architecture, ornamentation, furniture, and social nature. These works consider the nuanced understanding of art, design, and craft to push conceptual and material boundaries.
