The pillars in this project are metaphors for a boundary as well as a passage between two opposite ideas—the tragic past of the abandoned historic building and the future of the site as a vibrant cultural park, represented by sugar powder and the mirror respectively. The transparent, delicate, and almost invisible quality of the pillars, conceptually supporting the dark, rustic building, represents the people’s belief in spirits and gods that has long sustained this culture throughout its hardships.
